It seems like CBD is everywhere today and people claim that it can be used for almost anything, from pain and anxiety relief, to managing symptoms of multiple sclerosis and even using CBD in your daily skincare routine.
Well, no matter how skeptical you are of this, read on as I tell you that this is no way a bogus claim and that CBD indeed is capable enough to help with many health issues.
CBD Oil Basics
CBD is produced by the Cannabis Sativa plant, as one of 113 naturally-occurring cannabinoids. The most famous one is THC, known for its psychotropic effects. CBD is right next to it, but unlike THC, CBD does not have any psychoactive effect. Instead, CBD has an array of beneficial effects on the health, supporting the endocannabinoid system and helping the body restore its natural balance.
CBD has a lot more to offer and it has specific beneficial effects, all of which could be useful in maintaining the health of the skin. Here are the main known effects CBD has:
- Anti-oxidant effect: CBD can fight free radicals, battling the oxidative stress. This is helpful for proper skin health, as the skin is very prone to UV and free radical damage.
- Anti-inflammatory effect: CBD is very well linked to aiding in the reduction of inflammation. This property is very useful for skin health, especially in protecting the skin from acne and other inflammatory processes.
- Anti-bacterial effect: CBD is a natural antibacterial treatment, and it is even useful in treating resistant forms of staph infections. Since our skin is always exposed to bacteria, treating it with an anti-bacterial treatment is good for the health and protection from bacterial infections.
- Moisturizing effect: CBD and other cannabinoids are lipid compounds; hemp oil is also full of useful essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals necessary for the normal functioning of the skin. These protect the skin against over-drying, and bring much-needed moisture to extremely dry and chapped skin, helping it regenerate and rejuvenate.
CBD for Skin health
Most of the CBD products on the market intended for skincare are in the form of CBD topical creams, lotions, and salves. However, some companies also make skincare serums or other types of CBD-based oils that can be used in specific areas.
The majority of the CBD skincare products are made with CBD isolate, where only the CBD is present in the blend. These have their merits, but I believe that the ones made from full-spectrum CBD hemp extract have a better, more wholesome effect.
Even though the full-spectrum CBD hemp extract contains a small amount of THC, this is in no way enough to cause a psychoactive effect and it will not get you high. Plus, the legal limit is below 0.3%, so you can rest assured that you will not be breaking any laws regarding the use of full-spectrum CBD skincare products.
CBD Products for skincare
As I outlined, CBD skincare products come in several varieties: creams, salve, lotions, oils, balsams, and more. The product you need depends on your symptoms and intended use. Like if you are going to treat yourself to the moisturizing effect of CBD, then I suggest you try using a CBD-based moisturizing lotion that has a thinner consistency and can be easily spread over a larger area.
If you are using CBD cream for treating the dry skin on your elbows, then it is recommended you use a salve or a cream with a thicker consistency, so you can easily apply it to the areas in need.
You can also resort to using CBD tincture directly on your skin as you would still get the beneficial effects of the CBD. However, in this case, you will have an oily feel of the skin, and you will waste a lot of CBD oil without getting the maximum effect. Another thing, it is very difficult to make the CBD tincture stay on your skin where you want it, as it tends to run out.
If you are wondering how much CBD skincare products to use and how often to use them, here is a general guideline. Start with a little bit, just so you test if you are allergic to some of the ingredients. If everything works fine, then you can continue using the CBD skincare product as you would any other type of skincare product. Simple as that.
A note here: always look for quality CBD products from respectable manufacturers. Avoid cheap, low-grade products as these usually contain low amounts of CBD and have artificial ingredients. Instead, look for all-natural products brought by CBD brands that have a history of transparency and honesty.
