CBD Oil For Sciatica

A specific type of localized pain in the lower back, sciatica is a type of pain is caused by pinching of the sciatic nerve. The pain can range from mild discomfort to severe pain that leaves people bed-bound. Here I’ll provide an overview of this condition and share info on the most common ways people treat it, including taking natural supplements like CBD.

Sciatic Pain – What Is It?

Our legs are controlled by the sciatic nerves that go from the spine through the pelvis in the legs. Due to the muscle and ligament arrangement in the lower back, the sciatic nerve is not very well protected and is often prone to injuries.

If this nerve gets compressed or pinched, this is manifested as sharp pain going from the lower back down the legs. The sciatic pain can also be felt as burning sensation, dull ache or tingling in the lower back and pelvis.

The damage to the sciatic nerve can happen from several causes like spraining, spinal stenosis, injury, herniated disks, bone spurs, and other types of damage that requires surgery. I had a back injury a while back that resulted in sciatic nerve damage and I was doing physical therapy for the pain for about six months. I still have residual pain if I don’t stay on my workout regimen.

My doctor prescribed pain medication which I was reluctant to take as it messed up my daily life, so I turned to natural remedies and a strict workout plan. Staying consistent with core stretching, breathing, and exercise makes it much easier to keep your sciatica from spasming.

CBD and Sciatic Pain

The pain caused by damage to the sciatic nerve manifests as both neuropathic and nociceptive pain. I can personally attest to this, as I feel my back injury even when there is no apparent reason for this. For those of you that don’t know about the different types of pain, I’ve covered this in more detail in a separate article so here are just the basics.

The nociceptive pain is caused by tissue damage and the neuropathic pain occurs from the damage of the nerves. Both of these in combination results in a chronic condition that is hard to treat with a single medication and requires a combination of medicaments like NSAIDs, opioids, antidepressants, and anticonvulsants.

Taking these can bring relief to the sciatic pain for the short term, but not without risks of serious side effects like damage to the kidneys, liver, heart, and more. Taking opioids leads to addiction and long-term damage.

But there is good news after all. The pain response if the body is governed by the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is governed by natural endocannabinoid compounds. CBD is very similar to the natural endocannabinoid compounds and it easily binds with the CB receptors, stimulating them and reducing the feeling of pain.

When we talk about sciatica pain, CBD could potentially help with nerve degradation and prevent tissue damage in the area surrounding the sciatic nerve. Taking CBD in both topical and oral form can be of great help for reducing the sciatic nerve pain and improving wellbeing.

CBD Products For Sciatica

Most of the people, including me have used CBD tinctures for dealing with many health concerns. Taking CBD as an oral tincture is an easy way to help treat many different issues, as CBD is not selective, but binds with the CB receptors throughout the body, helping the ECS restore the natural balance. Other oral products include CBD capsules, CBD edibles, CBD vapes, and more.

Still, for treating sciatica pain, many people have found relief from applying CBD topical creams directly on the affected areas. Using CBD products this way brings the CBD right on the affected areas where it gets absorbed, providing relief from pain.

If you have mild to moderate pain caused by sciatic nerve damage, then you can try using only one type of CBD product like CBD tincture or use a CBD cream. But if you are suffering from severe pain, then I would recommend you use CBD both internally in the form of CBD tincture, edible, vape, or a capsule and apply a quality pain-relieving CBD topical on your lower back.

If you have ever suffered from lower back pain, then you know that this is no walk in the park, but is a serious condition that will leave you in a poor state for a long time. Doctors usually prescribe pain medication that could be addictive and most certainly brings adverse effects after prolonged use.

That is why I have opted to use CBD for my back pain and recommend it to every person in need of sciatic pain relief. CBD is non-addictive, non-psychoactive, and has no known adverse effects, while it has good pain-relieving properties and helps the body find its natural balance.
